MAHTOMEDI--Richard Harris, 89, of Mahtomedi, MN, died September 10, 2026, at home with his son, Mark, by his side. He was born May 24, 1937, in New Ulm, MN, to Oswald and Edith (Kemske) Harris. After graduating from New Ulm Public High School in 1955, Richard earned a BA in Social Studies from Mankato State College and pursued graduate work at the University of Minnesota.
Richard taught high school history and social studies for ten years. He then transitioned his work toward advocacy for economic and social equality. Working through the governor's Office of Economic Opportunity, he helped establish a local presence for nonprofit organizations providing Meals on Wheels, Head Start, and summer employment for low-income college students. He ran for state senate, was active in local politics, and was involved with the Minnesota Welsh Association, where he enjoyed its music and fellowship.
A lifelong Episcopalian, Richard served his church in roles from music to administration, most recently at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kasson, MN. He is survived by his son, Mark (Andrea Lampland); grandsons William, Samuel, and Cameron Harris; sisters Barbara (Harris) Wegge and Deborah (Harris) Gintner; and several nieces, nephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sheryl (Kassel) Harris; his daughter, Roseanne Harris; and his brothers-in-law Lyndell Wegge and Gary Gintner.
Richard donated his body to the University of Minnesota Medical School's Anatomy Bequest Program and will ultimately be laid to rest at the Mantorville Cemetery beside his wife and daughter. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, October 18, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kasson, Minnesota, with Fr. Henry Doyle presiding. Memorials may be directed to St. Peter's Episcopal Church.
