NAPERVILLE, IL--Marlis Hutchinson, 101, passed away on Thursday, September 3, 2026 at The Springs at Monarch Landing, Naperville, IL. She was born on July 9, 1925 in New Ulm, MN to Agnes (Brandel) Hornig. Her half-brother was Lawrence Hornig and half-sister Leona Rubie.
When Marlis lived in Aurora, IL, she worked as a telephone operator and then in the business office at Illinois Bell Telephone in the 1940's and 1950's. She married William F. Weiss on July 30, 1949. He died on August 23, 1988. To this union were children Beth A. (Thomas) Carter of Aurora, IL, Julie A. (Barry) Kolanowski of Wheaton, IL and William R. (Cindy) Weiss of Frisco, TX.
Marlis was active in the Bardwell School PTA and also became a lunch room mother at the school during the 1980's and 90's. She was also active with the Kane County Homemakers – Kennedy Unit. She learned how to drive at age 63 and promptly drove thru the garage and into the garden!
Love found her again and she married Elmer (Bud) Hutchinson on March 30, 1990. They traveled the United States and Canada in their Airstream trailer with the Wally Byum Airstream Club. She and Bud attended many history classes at Waubonsee Community College. Bud passed away on April 10, 2020.
Marlis used her sewing skills to make walker bags, wheelchair bags, large bibs, designed and made pillows for post-surgical patients and clothing for Haitian children. The groups that benefited from these were: Mutual Ground, American Cancer Society, Marklund and veteran nursing homes.
She was a long-time member of Fourth Street United Methodist where she was active in women's groups at the church. Marlis recently became a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church of Warrenville, IL.
She and Bud moved into Monarch Landing on December 8, 2008. Marlis made the transition to The Springs at Monarch Landing in January 2025.
She is proceeded in death by: her mother, Agnes Hornig, both husbands, William F. Weiss and Elmer F. Hutchinson, grandson Jacob Carter, step-son Gerald Hutchinson, step-grandson Chad Hutchinson, half-brother Lawrence Hornig.
Marlis is survived by: her half-sister Leona Rubie, children Beth (Thomas) Carter, Julie (Barry) Kolanowski, and Bill (Cindy) Weiss. Also step-daughter Sally (David) Weddige and step-son Doug (Karen) Hutchinson, 13 grandchildren – Allison Carter, Joseph (Kate) Seeler, Michael (Melissa) Seeler, Rachel Seeler, Lori Kolanowski, Stacey Gacek, Rob (Morgan) Kolanowski, Josh Kolanowski, Mary Grace Haugen, Eleanor Haugen, David (Maria) Weddige, Diana (Bill) Michels, Mike (Kristi) Weddige, 17 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many, many friends who will dearly miss her.
Services will be held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. Visitation will be at 10:00 am with funeral service at 11:00 am at Dieterle Memorial Home at 1120 S. Broadway, Montgomery, IL. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery following the service. A luncheon will be served.
