“JRoc,” Jason Richard Gronewold Sr.

NEW ULM–“JRoc,” Jason Richard Gronewold Sr., age 42, passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of May 17, 2026, at his home. Jason was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and friend who touched many lives. He loved helping others and would be there for you, even if it meant putting his own projects aside. He wouldn’t let you down. He made people feel valued and seen. He gave his time, encouragement, and a listening ear to anyone who needed it, without judgment.

It was said, “His laugh was contagious, his advice was honest, and his heart was bigger than most people could ever imagine. He was a friend to so many, but he loved his children more than anything else.”

He was an accomplished pianist and baritone player. He graduated with straight A’s and was a quarterback during his first year of sports, but he loved playing softball in 4-H the most. In fact, with one game left in his final season, he refused to miss it after having his wisdom teeth pulled just the day before.

His hobbies included tattooing, drawing art, raising indoor plants, shoveling snow, cleaning and polishing his pickup, and sitting on the couch with his dog, Rueben — but most of all, riding his motorcycle. He put thousands of miles on it.

Jason held many different jobs throughout his life, including boiler operator, roofer, power washer for hog barns, wind turbine technician crew chief, hog slat replacement crew chief, and lastly, welder at Senneca Holdings in Mankato, where he operated an industrial plasma cutter. No job was beneath him, and he was a perfectionist at each one. He expected nothing less from the people he managed. Oftentimes, he would say, “People just don’t know how to work.” He pushed each person to do and be their best.

Jason was preceded in death by his brother, Dustin; sister, Jessica; uncle, Chet Gronewold; and grandparents, Phil and Amelia Gronewold.

He is survived by his mother, Wendy, and stepfather, Brad Woller; sisters, Tabitha and Erin; brother, Nicholas; children, Devin, JJ, Carsten, Apple, Jason Jr., and Lola; nephew, Isaac; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and Randy Gjerde, who was a significant influence in his life.

Funeral service will be 5:00 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 2026, at Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes – SOUTH Chapel in New Ulm.
