Wynn Hughes was born on December 21, 1955, in Havre, Montana, to Evelyn (Olson) Hughes. When he was five years old, his family moved to Minnesota, eventually settling in New Ulm when he was 11 years old. New Ulm became his lifelong home. He attended Trinity Catholic School and New Ulm High School. At a young age, Wynn began working for Schanus Plumbing, where Ray Schanus took him under his wing and taught him the plumbing trade. Wynn remained deeply grateful to Ray for the guidance and opportunities he provided. Over the years, Wynn worked both as a plumber and as a truck driver. Driving truck was one of Wynn’s greatest passions. He loved the freedom of the open road and the opportunity to explore the United States. Wynn found joy in riding his motorcycle, fishing, hunting, shooting, and spending time outdoors. Although Minnesota was home, Montana always held a special place in his heart, especially the Mission Range.
On November 27, 1987, Wynn married the love of his life, Denise Flogstad Hughes, in New Ulm. Together they built a life grounded in love, loyalty, and shared experiences.
Wynn was a man of contradictions in the best possible way–tough on the outside, but deeply soft-hearted beneath it all. He was genuine and straightforward, never pretending to be anything other than exactly who he was. He had a gift of gab and could strike up a conversation with anyone. To many, he became more than a friend; he was a “brother.” Wynn loved fiercely, and those fortunate enough to be part of his inner circle knew the depth of his devotion. Wynn also had a quiet appreciation for the night sky. He loved watching the International Space Station pass overhead and keeping an eye out for shooting stars.
Wynn will be remembered for his booming personality, his honesty, his adventurous spirit, and the immense love he shared with family and friends. His presence was unforgettable, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Blessed be his memory.
