NEW ULM (formerly Hutchinson)–Donald “Don” William Burns, age 77 of New Ulm (formerly Hutchinson) died peacefully with his family by his side on Monday, April 27, 2026 at the New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. A graveside service will be held at 12pm on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, in the Soldier’s Rest Section of the New Ulm City Cemetery in New Ulm. Full military honors will be provided by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard. The Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes of New Ulm are assisting the family with arrangements at this time. Don is survived by his wife, Kari Burns of Hutchinson; his daughters, Amy Burns of Arizona, Angela Vostrejs of Colorado; his step-daughter, Jordan Villapudua and her children Bentley, Briella and Bryleigh all of Hutchinson; his brothers, Robert (Sharon) Burns of Adams Center, New York, Richie (Kathy) Burns of Copenhagen, New York; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Tyree; and his brothers, Ronald, Tom, and John Burns.
Donald “Don” William Burns was born on October 4, 1948, in Henderson, New York, to John and Dorothy (Weir) Burns. Growing up in New York State, Don was a 1966 graduate of Adams Center Central High School. Soon after graduation, Don proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as Military Police while stationed in Syracuse, New York and Elmendorf, Alaska. He was honorably discharged on October,1st 1980.
Following his time in the service, Don returned to New York and pursued his passion for the game of golf, embarking on a career that reflected his deep love and dedication to the sport. Through golf, he enjoyed traveling and experiencing many parts of the country and world, forming friendships and memories along the way.
On August 2, 2018, Don was united in marriage to Kari Peterson in Glencoe. Together, they made their home in rural Hutchinson, where they shared a life grounded in companionship, laughter, and quiet moments together.
Beyond golf, Don had a wide range of interests that reflected his appreciation for the outdoors and simple pleasures in life. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping and hunting, and he especially treasured time spent boating on area lakes. Don also shared his musical talents through playing guitar, bringing joy to those around him.
Don lived in rural Hutchinson until his diagnosis with dementia led him to move to New Ulm, where he received care in his later years. He was a proud member of the Hutchinson VFW, the American Legion while in Arizona, and the Elks Lodge of Hutchinson.
Don will be remembered as a kind, loving, and honest man whose presence brought comfort to those around him. He lived his life with quiet strength, a generous spirit, and a deep appreciation for the people around him. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Blessed be his memory.
