DeWayne Blaalid

April 11, 1939- April 23, 2026

GIBBON–DeWayne Blaalid, 87, of rural Gibbon passed away Thursday, April 23, 2026 at the Sleepy Eye Rehabilitation Center, Sleepy Eye. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Pastor Jeffrey Bovee officiating. Burial will be in the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1st, 2026 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH Chapel in New Ulm and will continue one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday. DeWayne is survived by his children: David Blaalid of rural Gibbon, Julie (Fred) Wiethoff of rural Fairfax, Susie Blaalid of Courtland, Sheri (Tim) Krogen of rural Marshall, Daniel Blaalid of Morgan, and Dianna (Charlie) Wiethoff of rural Gibbon; Grandchildren: Ashley (Eric) Honetschlager, Cassaundra (Kyle) Brunick, Luke and Rachel Wiethoff; Great-Grandchildren: Elliette and Falon Honetschlager, Logan, Palmer, and Scottie Brunick; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Jerry Buerkle of Wisconsin, nieces, nephew, and other relatives. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine (in 2004); parents, Palmer and Esther Blaalid; sister, Bernell Blaalid, brother, Glen Blaalid, and by father-in-law and mother-in-law, William (Bill) and Alvina Dourleyn.

DeWayne Jerome Blaalid, the son of Palmer and Esther (Gregory) Blaalid, was born on April 11, 1939. He attended grade school in Lafayette. Due to a heart condition, he did not attend high school. He worked as a hired hand for area farmers. On June 22, 1960 he was united in marriage to Elaine Dourleyn at the St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ridgely Township, Nicollet County. After marriage they resided at his wife’s family farm in West Newton Township. He worked hard alongside his wife on the farm milking cows, raising crops, raising chickens, selling eggs on an egg route, and raising their six children. DeWayne enjoyed deer hunting, watching westerns, making a beef roast with mashed potatoes, tater tot hotdish, and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Sleepy Eye Medical Center for the care given to DeWayne. Also, a sincere thank you to all the nurses and staff at the Sleepy Eye Assisted Living and Sleepy Eye Rehabilitation Center for the care and support given to DeWayne.
