Marvin was born June 20, 1933, in a farmhouse near Burdette, South Dakota, the son of David and Gladys (Curtis) Newman. Marvin and his family moved several times while he was growing up eventually settling on a farm west of Athol. He attended country schools until boarding at private residences while attending high school in Redfield, where he graduated in 1951.
On September 7, 1951, he was united in marriage to Dorinne Prindle in Redfield. They lived in Redfield, Stratford, Aberdeen, and Milbank before moving to Comfrey, Minnesota, in 1960. He worked for over 38 years in the agribusiness industry working at several different elevators for Cargill, retiring in 1993 as the manager of the elevator in Comfrey.
After Marvin and Dorinne were married, he was baptized into the Methodist faith and was a member of Willmar United Methodist Church. While living in Comfrey, he was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, serving as an usher, and they enjoyed participating in the church’s couples club.
Marvin also volunteered for the Comfrey Fire Department as a firefighter for more than 20 years. He served multiple terms on the Comfrey School Board where he enjoyed attending the state convention each year. He also served on the Windom Vocational Training High School Board. Marvin also was active with the Comfrey Commercial Club, Comfrey Lion’s Club, and he worked with the Boy Scouts.
Marvin worked many long hours but he always had time for his children and attending their activities, and this carried over to his grandchildren. Marvin and Dorinne could often be found watching a grandchild at a sporting event, musical performance, and homecoming coronations, raising pheasants, hunting, and of course, sharing his love of fishing and just being on the water.
As a young man, Marvin acquired the love of hunting and always enjoyed taking friends back to South Dakota for the pheasant opener to be with his brothers and other family. Deer hunting and fishing trips with his sons, well stocked with food prepared and packed by Dorinne always was a great outing regardless of the success of the outing. His enduring love of fishing was made even better when he and Dorinne moved to a lake home outside of
Willmar following his retirement. Although Comfrey always remained home because that’s where they raised their children, they loved the Willmar area.
Surviving are his children, Camelia (Mark) Sturm of St. James, Rodney (Brenda) Newman of Bloomington, Cynthia Beranek of New Ulm, Christie Newman of Minneapolis, Rickey (Mari) Newman of Waconia; 16 grandchildren: Matthew (Alison) Sturm, Aaron (Maggie) Sturm, Ryan (Chelsie) Sturm, Nathan (Anna) Newman, Megan (Jared) Newman Heiden, Melissa (Dustin) Puhrmann, Christopher (Amanda) Beranek, Kari (Jason) Steele, Karen (Eric) Barsness, Roxann (Josh) Klein, Perry (Jessie) Beranek, Gary (Kara) Beranek, Geoffrey (Lynn) Beranek, Thom (Kate Black) Boik, Luke (Kylie Parry) Schiller, and Andrew (Jenny) Newman; and 31 great-grandchildren: Aria, Kadance, Owen, Ian, Reghan, Bo, Jett, Macie, Marlow, Merrick, Ethan, Jillian, August, Ben, Katelyn, Joe, Connor, Hannah, Kennedy, Ethan, Caleb, Isaac, Brody, Alaina, Whitney, Lyla, Grayson, Juniper, Indigo, Lark and Bennett.
