He eventually left school and joined the U.S. Navy on March 3, 1974. Mark went to boot camp at Great Lakes, IL, and reported to duty on ship USS William M. Wood DD715 which was stationed in Athens, Greece.

Later, Mark joined the U.S. Army Reserve, 452nd. He stayed in Winthrop for five and a half years. During that time he spent two weeks training in South Korea at Camp Carroll Army Base, where he worked with the South Koreans until he was stationed to the USS Cimarron AD 77 out of Minneapolis. A highlight of his service was the time Mark spent training aboard the ship stationed in Pearl Harbor. He retired from his military service after 17 and a half years.

Outside his military career, Mark worked many part time jobs, owned and operated a scrapyard, and worked full time at M.G. Waldbums in Gaylord. On June 3, 1978, Mark was united in marriage to Lynne Zemple at Courtland Evangelical Lutheran Church and their union was blessed with five children. When he was not working, Mark was helping his wonderful wife raise their five children by helping with their schoolwork, sports, scouts, camping trips, and much more. He was also a lifetime member in the DAV, Tin Can Sailor, and USS William M. Wood Memorial.

Mark will be dearly missed by those that knew him. Blessed be his memory.
