Francis H. Liebl

Francis H. Liebl, 82, of New London, died Sunday, December 17, at Bethesda North Pointe. His Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 21, at the Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Spicer with interment in the church cemetery. His visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 20, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Francis H. Liebl was born November 4, 1941, in New Ulm, Minnesota, the middle of nine children born to John and Crescentia (Hartung) Liebl. He grew up and attended school in St. George, Minnesota. On May 18, 1963, he married Deanna Sue Schroeder, and five children were born to their marriage: Barbara, Lauri, Bonnie, Chad, and Terri.

In 1968, they moved to Willmar and Francis started Liebl Inc., which later became Midwest Alfalfa in Priam. Even after selling the Alfalfa plant in 1996, Francis dedicated much of his time to his love of farming. Most recent, he owned and operated Liebl Farms in Belgrade, which he continued operating just days before his passing. Although his true passion was farming, Francis was a true entrepreneur, and always ready for the next challenge. He is known to many for his multiple real estate transactions involving land, always wheeling and dealing. Additionally, a few businesses locally he owned at one point are Sunray Square Convenience and Café in Willmar, Mittens & More based out of New London, and the County Line Bar in Regal. Whether it was a section of land with an overgrown ditch bank or a restaurant that needed a new look, Francis knew how to make it produce!

Francis was the life of the party with his infectious laugh and sense of humor. He always enjoyed having a good time, yet he was a timely man and liked routine. Francis was a hard worker and is proud to have passed along his strong work ethic to his five children.

He is survived by his wife: Deanna Liebl; five children: Barbara (Keith) Orsten of Willmar, Lauri Liebl of Willmar, Bonnie (Jerry) Herda of Deer River, Chad (Pamela) Liebl of Sarasota, FL, and Terri (Jay) Bierbaum of Maple Grove; ten grandchildren: Brandon Orsten, Jaime Vlaminck, Quentin Orsten, Lindsey Herda, Justin Liebl, Juanita Zieske, Nicole Liebl, Samantha Sahr, Gabriela Yagow, and Elise Bierbaum; and thirteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four siblings: Susan (Donald) Forster, Monica Stephenson, Tony (Karen) Liebl, and Mary (Cy) Case; a sister-in-law: Janet (Steve) Buboltz and Donna Liebl; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers: John, Joseph, Donald, and Jerome.
