NEW ULM — Verna Joel, 100, of New Ulm died Thursday April 13, 2023 at Mayo Health Systems in Mankato.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2023 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Burial will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH Chapel in New Ulm.

The Christian Mother’s Society will pray the rosary at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Cathedral.

Verna is survived by her daughters, Marian (Jerry) Kamm and Linda (Steve) Kral all of New Ulm; her sons, Roy Joel of St. Paul, Vern Joel (Le’) Hardt of Sterling, Virginia, Miron (Sue) Joel of Grand Rapids, Martin (Sharon) Joel of North Mankato and Fred (Karen) Joel of Arburn, Massachusetts; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great;grandchildren; a brother, Fred (Verna) Hartmann of Thief River Falls; and all of her lady friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy; brothers, Howard and Otto Hartmann; sisters-in-law, Bernice, Mary Jane and Margie Hartmann; and a daughter-in-law, Barb.

Verna H. Hartmann was born June 14, 1922 in West Newton Township to Albert and Alvina (Reinhart) Hartmann. She attended Dist. #16 School and St. George Catholic School. Verna was united in marriage to LeRoy Joel on October 21, 1942 at St. George Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and also was employed at 3M in New Ulm until her retirement. Verna’s hobbies included bicycling, dancing, camping, bird watching and hiking.

She was a member of the Cathedral Parish, Christian Mother’s Society, Polka Lovers of America and the Shoenstatt Movement.
