WINTHROP — Robert “Bob” Sallstrom, age 97, of Winthrop passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Arlington.

Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 4, 2023, 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop with Pastor Erik Karlson officiating. Interment will be in the Winthrop Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., ALL at church.

Robert “Bob” Harold Sallstrom was born on November 19, 1925, at home in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, MN. He was the son of Axel and Ruth (Monson) Sallstrom. Bob was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth, both at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop. He received his education at country school through the eighth grade and was a graduate of the Gibbon High School Class of 1944. Bob attended the University of Minnesota, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. While in college he enjoyed being on several judging teams.

Bob entered active military duty on September 20, 1950, and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He received the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star, United Nation Service Medal and the Com Rib w/1 Met Pend. Bob was honorable discharged on August 5, 1952, having achieved the rank of Sergeant.

On December 27, 1950, Bob was united in marriage to Barbara Hansen, in Minneapolis, MN. This union was blessed with the birth of one daughter and two sons. Barbara resided in California, while Bob served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Bob and Barbara moved to rural Winthrop in 1952, where they farmed in Bismarck Township; raising registered Black Angus Beef and selling bulls, until their retirement in 1992. The couple shared nearly 50 years of marriage when Barbara passed away on August 17, 2000.

Bob was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winthrop, and served on the church council. He served on the Bismarck Township Board, Winthrop School Board, Ag Land Co-op Board, Minnesota Angus Association Board, Minnesota Soybean Association Board, Beef Cattle Improvement Board, Federal Land Bank Board and State Angus Board. Bob enjoyed being on these boards and seeing them succeed. He also served as the Jackson County Extension Agent prior to going in the military.

Bob enjoyed reading, especially biographies and history. Education and family were important to Bob. He cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

When he needed assistance with his care, Bob became a resident of the Winthrop Lodge Assisted Living for a number of years and then moved to Good Samaritan Society in Arlington in August of 2022, and passed away there on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at the age of 97 years. Blessed be his memory.

Bob is survived by his children, Sue Wold and her husband, Bill of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim Sallstrom and his wife, Laura of Winthrop, MN, and Steve Sallstrom and his wife, Brenda of Plymouth, MN; grandchildren, Kari (Felipe) Benguria, Erik (Annie) Wold, Anna (Charlie) Gokey, Duncan (Marisa) Sallstrom, Alissa (Andrew) Evenson, Blake Clobes; 9 great-granddaughters; brother, Ray Sallstrom of Winthrop, MN; cousin, Pat Ericson of Gibbon, MN; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Axel and Ruth Sallstrom; wife, Barbara Sallstrom in 2000; sister, Edith (Merton) Johnson; brother, John (Delpha) Sallstrom; sisters-in-law, Margaret Sallstrom, Joan (Dick) Pattijohn; brother-in-law, George (Natalie) Hansen.
