Humane Society seeks volunteer animal lovers

To the editor:

I have worked with dogs at the Brown County Humane Society shelter since Dec. 12, 2005, and have consistently referred to it as the “Cadillac” of shelters. Our building and accommodations are adequate, the public has been generous in supporting us financially and the influx of good, dedicated volunteers has replaced good, dedicated people who left. That is no longer the case.

The BCHS shelter has nine permanent kennels and the capacity to set up smaller, temporary kennels to accommodate smaller dogs. We are licensed for 10 dogs. Our number of volunteers has diminished to the point that we are at risk for being able to provide only necessary care for the animals. Just not enough people available to provide more.

Up to this time, we have been able to provide each dog with a 1-3 mile walk each morning, play time at the dog park, time outside in our shelter runs, and unstructured time to socialize with other dogs and volunteers. Those are the reasons I believe our shelter has been special. We have been more than a warehouse for animals in need of homes. I hope that does not change due to an inadequate number of volunteers.

A few years ago, the Renville-Sibley Humane Society ceased functioning because it did not have enough volunteers. They had financial support but not enough people. At that time the BCHS Board agreed to take animals from their area. We currently have four dogs from those counties. The animal in front of us who needs care and protection is the one we tend to.

During 2020, we had 404 adoptions of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies. For 2021, the number was 358. These numbers do not include the lost animals who we assist in returning to their homes.

We are a completely volunteer organization. Each person commits time and treasure to the work. If you want to be a part of it, please call our shelter at 507-359-2312. Should we not be available, leave your name and a number. To be clear, I am not a member of the BCHS board and speak only for myself.

Hoping to hear from you.
