Henry ‘Hank’ G. Brandel

SLEEPY EYE — Henry “Hank” G. Brandel, Jr., 87, of Sleepy Eye, MN formerly of Atwater, MN died on July 9, 2021 of pneumonia complications at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Visitors may call on the family at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye on Friday, August 6th, 2021 from 9:30 -10:30 a.m.

A memorial service honoring Hank will begin at 10:30 a.m. with burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery to follow.

Military Honors by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard.

A private luncheon for immediate family will be served.

Henry was born March 7, 1934, in West Newton Township, St. George, MN. to Henry Sr. and Anna (Preisinger) Brandel. Henry grew up in St. George, and graduated from New Ulm Public School. After graduation Hank joined the US Army serving in the US and Germany. On December 27, 1961, Hank married Patricia Hillesheim at St. Mary’s Church in Sleepy Eye. The couple lived in St. George several years. Hank worked for Knopke Garage, Klossner Creamery, and General Trading in New Ulm. In 1971, Hank joined a farming partnership with his brother Francis Brandel in Atwater. There he farmed forty-seven years. Hank enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening, farming, putting puzzles together, and his dog Barney. Due to declining health, Hank moved to the Sleepy Eye Care Center in 2019.

Hank is survived by his wife, Patricia of Sleepy Eye, formerly of Atwater. Brothers, Anthony Brandel of St. George, John Brandel of Maplewood, and Paul (Carrie) Brandel of Blaine. Sisters, Rosella Kimel of Fremont, CA., Anne (Michael) Vieira of Marysville, CA., Kathy (Steve) Johnson of Snellsville, GA., sisters-in-law, Linda Brandel of Henderson, NV., and brother-in-law, LeRoy Byer of New Ulm. Hanks wife’s family, Brother-in-law and Sisters-in-law Stephen (Lois) Hillesheim, Sleepy Eye, Charlene (Gilbert) Peichel, Dell Rapids, SD., Johnora (Lon) DeGregoris, Chandler, AZ., Renee (Lonnie) Wendinger, Sleepy Eye, and many nieces and nephews.

Hank was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Patrick Brandel, Francis Brandel, Leo Brandel, infant brother Ralph Brandel, Dorothy Byer, Mary Kimel, and Alice Hauser. Brothers-in-law, Stanley Kimel, Eugene Kimel, and Jerome Hauser. Sister-in-law, Ann Brandel. Father and mother-in-law, Charles and Sophia Hillesheim.
