Marlys was born in New Ulm on Oct. 29, 1931 to Everett and Hildegard (Amman) Christensen. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at the University of Minnesota and later taught in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She returned to New Ulm, married an Army Officer, traveled extensively and raised six children. She was extremely active with the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Red Cross and received numerous awards and accolades for her dedication from these and other organizations as well. She taught swim lessons and trained Water Safety Instructors at many of the military bases where her family was stationed. Marlys had a deep love for many things including swimming and synchronized swimming, golf, tennis, the outdoors and was a dedicated dog lover.

Marlys is survived by her children, Ann (Ken) Bemboom, Matthew (Deanna) Schmidt, Joan (Kevin) Joyce, Jane (James) Heath, Thomas Schmidt, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and her two beloved dogs, MeeToo and Chichi. Marlys was preceded in death by her parents and son, Mark.
