James “Red” Theodore Spellum

LUVERNE — James “Red” Theodore Spellum, formerly of Lafayette, age 72, passed away Monday, February 22nd, in Luverne, MN.

Jim was born to James & Alice (Schwartz) Spellum and baptized in Glencoe, MN, then later confirmed in Lester Prairie, MN at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1963. He was raised by his mother, and lived with his grandparents, Frederick and Augusta Schwartz in Lester Prairie, MN. He graduated from Winthrop Community High School in 1968, then served in the US Navy aboard the USS Tappahannock as a gunner pilot in Vietnam participating in 4 war campaigns. When he retired from the Navy, he obtained his private pilots license and enjoyed taking friends to Canada for walleye fishing. Jim loved to fish, hunt, play city league baseball for the Lafayette Hawks, and umpiring for the Lafayette Little League, but what he loved the most were his family, friends and his faith. He loved spoiling his nieces, nephews and godchildren which he was to 6 babies. Jim belonged to the Lafayette American Legion and the Lafayette Jaycees, always entering chili cook-off contests for fundraisers; one batch regular, 2nd batch super-hot! He loved to travel and visited Europe twice with friends. He worked at 3M in New Ulm until illness forced him to retire.

Funeral service will be 2 PM Friday, February 26, 2021 at First Lutheran Church in Lafayette with Pastor Heidi Hagstrom officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier’s Rest Section with full military honors being provided by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of service at church on Friday.

Jim is survived by his loving mother Alice Lindquist of Winthrop; sisters, Mary Phillips (Steve Langhoff) of Lafayette, Jenny Lindquist of Eden Prairie, Anna Lindquist (Jay Corniea) of Minnetonka and step-sister Carol (Greg) Kilbane of Wichita, Kansas; step-brothers, Dean (Shirley) Lindquist of New Ulm and Lyle (Carla) Lindquist of Brooklyn Park; several cousins whom he loved so much, and many friends especially best friends, Jim Bartels and Steve Langhoff.

Those whom have passed before him are his step-father, Bob Lindquist; several aunts and uncles; and his grandparents, Frederick and Augusta Schwartz.
