Mabel’s Merkantil features local, area crafters
NEW ULM — The warmth and spirit of a traditional general store with hand-crafted goods from more than two dozen local and area vendors can be found at Mabel’s Merkantil, 204 Minnesota St. N.
New store items this season include German tea and New Ulm art including the Hermann the German statue and coffee cups and post cards with New Ulm themes created by Redwood Falls artist Bill Rubosky.
“We noticed last summer that a lot of people want New Ulm stuff. Our 3D art (creations that occupy height, width and depth for a more immersive experience) is very popular,” said Kelly Munce. “The little outfits on (3D) desk and porch geese are popular too.”
Other store items include hand soap, apparel, wood crafts including gnomes and cutting boards, animals made of yarn, fishing lures, jewelry and pet items.
A lifelong New Ulm resident, Munce was inspired to open the store after years of participating in vendor shows.
“I wanted to bring all the vendors together to a permanent spot so they don’t’ need to drag their products from place to place,” she said. “We’re open to hearing about new product suggestions from vendors.”
About a dozen vendors are from New Ulm. Others come from as far away as Hinckley. Vendors rent booth space or sell on commission.
The name Mabel comes from Munce’s grandmother’s name.
Store hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, noon to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
