Friday's preholiday travel breaks the record for the most airline travelers screened at US airports
ATLANTA (AP) -- A record was broken ahead of the Memorial Day weekend for the number of airline travelers screened at U.S. airports. The Transportation Security Administration said Saturday that more than 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports on Friday, surpassing a previous record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. In Atlanta, the world's busiest airport had its busiest day ever. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport broke a traffic record on Thursday when 111,000 passengers, airlines crew and airport employees were screened at security checkpoints. The second busiest day followed on Friday when 109,960 people were screened.
Suspect identified in stabbings at a Massachusetts theater and a McDonald's
BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) -- Authorities say a Massachusetts man will be arraigned Tuesday on multiple charges including assault with the intent to murder after six people, including four girls at a movie theater, were stabbed in separate attacks. Twenty-six-year-old Jared Ravizza, of Chilmark, a town on Martha's Vineyard, was arrested Saturday after a police pursuit. Police say the suspect entered a movie theater in Braintree without paying and attacked the girls aged 9 to 17 without any warning, then ran away. A man and a woman were later found stabbed at a McDonald's restaurant in Plymouth, about 27 miles south of Braintree. All six victims are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after being taken to hospitals.
Man accused of starting wildfire in national wildlife preserve
YUMA, Ariz. (AP) -- Authorities say a Yuma man has been arrested for allegedly starting a wildfire in a national wildlife preserve in southwest Arizona near the California border. Yuma County Sheriff's officials say 47-year-old Jason Bradley Martin remains jailed on suspicion of arson, criminal damage and other charges. They announced Saturday night that Martin was identified as a suspect in the fire and arrested. The wildfire was reported Saturday afternoon in the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge, which protects 30 miles of mostly wetland habitat along the Lower Colorado River. The blaze is 20% contained after burning more than 2 square miles of vegetation along the Arizona side of the Colorado River in Yuma County.
Mother pushes 2-year-old girl to safety just before fatal crash at Mich. drag race
OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. (AP) -- Police say a Michigan woman was killed when an out-of-control vehicle slammed into her during a drag-racing event, but she was able to push her 2-year-old daughter to safety in the seconds before the crash. MLive.com reports the crash happened Sunday at Silver Lake State Park Sand Dunes in western Oceana County. Police say the driver of a modified Jeep CJ lost control, veered off the racing strip toward the crowd and hit another vehicle, which struck 33-year-old spectator Kadie Price of Pierson. Police say Price was able to push her 2-year-old daughter to safety just before the crash, sparing the girl serious injury. Price died shortly after the crash.
