12 years after she vanished, divers believe they have found body of woman
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -- The body of a woman who went missing 12 years ago appears to have been found last week in a minivan submerged in a central Florida retention pond near Walt Disney World. The family of Sandra Lemire told local media that they believe that the remains found in the vehicle are the central Florida woman who vanished along with her car in 2012. Divers with Sunshine State Sonar found the vehicle last Saturday while searching in a small retention pond at the Disney World exit on Interstate 4 in Kissimmee, Florida.
FBI calls bomb threats of some state capitols a hoax
(AP) -- A bomb threat emailed to officials in several states has briefly disrupted government affairs and prompted some state capitol evacuations, but no explosives have been found and federal officials quickly dismissed the threats as a hoax. Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi and Montana and are among the states that evacuated statehouse offices or buildings on Wednesday morning. The FBI has said it is aware of numerous hoax bomb threats at state Capitol buildings, but that it has "no information to indicate a specific and credible threat."
Nebraska judge allows murder case to proceed against suspect in killing of priest
BLAIR, Neb. (AP) -- A Nebraska judge has agreed that the fact that the suspect was found lying on top of a badly wounded priest covered in blood stains last month inside the home where the priest lived next door to his small-town church suggests Kierre Williams was responsible for the killing. Washington County Judge Edward Matney ruled Wednesday there was probable cause for the murder case to proceed. Prosecutors have said there doesn't appear to be any connection between Williams and the Rev. Stephen Gutgsell who was fatally stabbed Dec. 10 inside the rectory for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in tiny Fort Calhoun.
US again renews protection for former Secretary of State Pompeo and top aide
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Biden administration has once again renewed taxpayer-funded protection for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and one of his top aides, who have been the target of persistent threats from Iran. The State Department notified Congress late last month that the threats against Pompeo and Trump administration Iran envoy Brian Hook remain "serious and credible" and continue to warrant government-provided security details. The notifications are dated Dec. 19 but were not transmitted to Congress until Dec. 22.
US job openings fell slightly in November but remain high by historical standards
WASHINGTON (AP) -- America's employers posted 8.8 million job openings in November, down slightly from October and the fewest since March 2021. But demand for workers remains strong by historical standards despite higher interest rates. Wednesday's report from the Labor Department showed that the number of job vacancies dipped from 8.9 million in October. It also showed that the number of people quitting their jobs -- a sign of confidence in the labor market -- fell to its lowest level since February 2021. The number of quits is now roughly where it stood before the pandemic erupted nearly four years ago.
