Grants available for reducing refrigerant emissions

Many of the chemicals that power refrigeration systems across Minnesota pose problems for the environment. These refrigerants can either contribute to climate change or damage the ozone layer when they leak from systems.

Replacing systems that leak refrigerant or that use refrigerants with a high global warming potential can reduce harm to the environment and often lower operating costs.

MPCA is offering approximately $110,000 for projects that will replace existing refrigeration equipment with new equipment that uses a refrigerant with at least 50% less GWP.

Eligible applicants must operate a refrigeration unit in a retail setting (such as a grocery store, convenience store, or liquor store) in Minnesota. For-profi t businesses applying must have 250 full-time employees or fewer. Governmental entities, nonprofi t organizations, tribes, and educational institutions may have any number of employees.

The maximum grant award is $20,000 per applicant. Applicants must match at least 25% of the total project cost. Matching funds must be cash and may be obtained through loans or other non-state grants if the applicant chooses.

Applications are due no later than Aug. 31.

Starting at $4.50/week.
