Ribbon cut on New Ulm dog boarding business

NEW ULM — Jon Hansen of New Ulm said he got his first dog, a golden retriever, 13 years ago, and he soon learned he enjoyed working with dogs and dog obedience training. He also said he enjoyed making friends with other dog owners.

Hansen worked at Pups Playland, a dog day care and boarding business on North Broadway Street before buying an existing dog boarding business and opening the Minnesota Canine Club, LLC, at 520 20th North Street May 2.

“My goal is to make New Ulm a little more dog-friendly,” Hansen said.

The business offers dog boarding, training, day care, 1 on 1 and group training.

“I’m looking for a (dog) groomer,” he said.

Business hours at 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends by appointment.

Hansen said he has 19 dogs now and has room for 22.

Hansen said he became more encouraged about the business after learning that some people were driving their dogs to Mankato for these services.

An open house is planned at 4 p.m. Friday, June 24.

On Wednesdays during June, Hansen invited dog owners to Pins and Paws at the August Schell Brewery, a local and regional animal rescue fundraiser with live music, food trucks and beer.

Pets remain leashed for the event. Participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
