The past month has been busy for Sleepy Eye FFA as six different Career Development Event (CDE) teams have competed in their region contests.

On September 23, the dairy contest started off our list of CDE competitions, taking place in Hutchinson. The dairy team placed 1st in the contest! Team members included Dustin Portner (1st ind.), Jared Portner, and Isaac Christensen. They evaluated classes of holstein and jersey cows and heifers, recited reasons to a judge on one class of cows, and completed a team activity with dairy trivia and management questions.

On October 8, the Horse, Forestry, and Poultry teams competed in Sherburn for their contests and all qualified for state!

The horse team took 2nd place in the competition. Team members included: Kenedi Wersal (2nd ind.), Millie Lax (9th ind.), and Avery Steffl. For the Horse CDE, members judge halter classes, performance classes (western pleasure, hunt seat, english pleasure, western riding, western horsemanship, and trail), and also take a test on general horse knowledge.

For the Forestry Contest, members identify trees, wood, and tools used in the forestry industry; measure trees; take a forestry exam; identify tree disorders; measure volume from logs and boards, and understand a chainsaw manual. The forestry team placed 5th overall in the Region VI Contest. The team members included: Clark Lazatin (7th Ind.), Riley Eckstein-Sprenger (11th ind), Jony Flores, and Ethan Evans.

The poultry team was the 5th Place Team overall and qualified for the state competition in April. The team consisted of Ethan Hinderman, Carson Sellner, Madelynn Mangen, Logan Hinderman, Leslie Marquez, and Lane Brandl. The Poultry CDE involves judging chicken and turkey carcasses, eggs, processed poultry, chicken parts identification, and taking a poultry knowledge test.

On October 12th, at SDSU, the next two teams that competed were Meats and Livestock Evaluation.

The Meats Team placed 9th in their competition. Team members include: Makayla Strong, Miah Rayas, Emma Bluhm, Lily Uys, and Aubree Maher. The Meats Evaluation and Technology CDE has students judge the quality yield and grade of beef carcasses and evaluate and place beef and pork carcasses. Students also identify various cuts of meat in relation to species, primal, and retail cuts.

The Livestock Evaluation Team earned 12th place. Team members included: Jaxon Steffl, Chloe Schwab, Ruby Tauer, and Lauren Steffl. During the Livestock Evaluation CDE, students evaluate beef cattle, sheep, goats, and swine on physical characteristics and records for market and breeding usage. Members give oral reasons explaining their placing of certain classes.
