The New Ulm Water/Steam Department will begin flushing water mains in areas of the community.
The increased flow rate scours the water pipe's inner walls and helps to remove build-up of naturally occurring debris and sediment. Flushing involves fully opening one or more hydrants and using the available flow rate to allow water to discharge from the system through select fire hydrants onto local roads or other surface areas. Flushing can be an important routine preventive maintenance technique and can reduce distribution system water age.
Flushing of water mains is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 21st, and flushing will be conducted daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. until completion. If Water/Steam Department employees are flushing mains in your neighborhood, avoid doing laundry during these hours. Please allow approximately one hour after daily flushing for water to clear.
