New Ulm Lions screen students’ eyes

The Lions Club of New Ulm, under the direction of School Nurse Britta Romsdahl, RN, BSN, PHN and New Ulm Lions KidSight Chair, Annette Haynes, screened the eyes of 555 students.
The students screened were from the 1st and 3rd grades of Jefferson Elementary School and the 5th and 7th grades of the Middle School. A total of 555 students were screened on Thursday and Friday February 8th and 9th. Of the 555 students screened, 56 were will be referred to be seen by an eye care professional.
The devise the Lions use to screen the students eyes is a Welch Allyn SPOT Vision Screener that is capable of screening for Astigmatism (blurred vision), Myopia (near-sightedness), Hyperopia (far-sightedness), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), Strabismus (eye misalignment), Amblyopia (lazy-eye), and Anisocoria (pupil size deviations). The screening takes just a few seconds and is performed from a distance of about three feet.
The Welch Allyn SPOT Vision Screeners are owned by Lions KidSight District 5M3, which is part of Lions KidSight USA, a nation-wide program that brings Lions Clubs across the country together to ensure our children receive eye screenings and follow-up care when needed.
