Lead exposure is a health issue we can't ignore. There are ways to reduce exposure, but the best solution is to remove the source of lead.
NUPU "Let's Get the Lead Out" project is aiming to do just that.
Following the guidelines set by the Minnesota Department of Health and the United States Environmental Protection Agency under the Lead & Copper Rule, step one is to determine what type of material is used in each homeowner & business owners service line.
A complete inventory is needed, so even if your house or business was built recently or you've had plumbing upgrades, we still need each property owners service line material.
NUPU asks that you complete the online survey form, or the physical form that was included in your utility bill. Copies are available at City Hall and the Public Utilities office if needed.
NUPU will continue to collect these forms but will also start calling residents and knocking on doors so the inventory can be complete early in 2024.
Residents are under no obligation to replace service line even if lead is found. This phase of the project is simply to gather the data needed to determine how much lead line is serving New Ulm residents.
Anyone with questions or would like to talk with a representative from the Water Department to assess services line and complete the form, please call 507-359-8279. There is no charge for this service.
With a complete inventory, NUPU will be in a good position to lobby for any State or Federal resources that may become available to help with steps to eliminate lead exposure.
