NEW ULM – Modification to Brown County landfill hours during winter months was approved by the Brown County Board of Commissioners during Tuesday's meeting.
The board moved to allow operations to close during the first and third Saturday in January and February.
The second and fourth Saturday in January and February will remain unchanged.
Stemming from a Solid Waste Advisory Committee meeting, it was determined that the operational startup costs outweigh the revenue brought in during operation hours on Saturdays in January and February.
It costs roughly $600 to $700 to turn landfill equipment on each day. Average daily revenue from the Saturdays in January and February is around $40 to $60.
Maintaining landfill operations on the second and fourth Saturday will allow people who are busy during weekday hours the opportunity to utilize services.
Commissioner Scott Windschitl agreed it does no good to keep operating when people are not utilizing services, but said to keep an eye on demand in case there becomes a need for additional Saturday hours.
Landfill hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, with last load at 4:30 p.m., and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
