NEW ULM - New Ulm's Ward 4 will have a new City Councilor in 2027.
Sue Ullery won the council seat Tuesday through a write-in vote. A total of 355 write-in votes were submitted for New Ulm's Ward 4 council seat. Ullery received the majority of the votes with 240.
Going into Tuesday's election, it was known that New Ulm's Ward 4 council election would be decided by write-in vote. In June, before the election filing period opened, current Ward 4 City Councilor Larry Mack announced he would not be seeking another term. However, after the election filing deadline passed, no other candidates had filed to run for the seat.
In September, Ullery announced her candidacy for Ward 4 as a write-in candidate. She was the only candidate to run for the seat openly.
Ullery is a long-time resident of New Ulm. She has lived in the community for 38 years, 30 of those years in the Fourth Ward.
Ullery recently retired from the New Ulm Public Library, where she worked as a part-time reference aid for 16 years.
Before the library, she worked at the Brown County Historical Society Museum as an exhibit coordinator. She worked on programming, setting up exhibits and helped conduct tours at the museum and at the John Lind House. She still assists with the annual cemetery tours each year.
Ullery has previously served on the District 88 School Board from 1998 to 2010.
In addition to Ward 4, New Ulm's Mayor and Ward 2 City Council seat were up for election this year. Incumbent Mayor Kathleen Backer and Ward 2 City Councilor Eric Warmka both filed for re-election, but ultimately ran unopposed and were re-elected with an overwhelming majority.
