NEW ULM – With Election Day less than a week away, early and absentee voting has been ramping up.
Auditor-Treasurer Kelly Hotovec said that as of Friday afternoon, there have been just over 1,000 early voters. Out of the 4,100 mail-in and absentee ballots that have been sent out, roughly 2,200 have been returned.
Despite the short timeframe until Election Day, it is not too late to return absentee ballots, although Hotovec does recommend doing so in person rather than by mail.
"As of Saturday it would be recommended to return in person to ensure that we receive them on time," Hotovec said. "Anything that is not received on election day will not be counted."
Absentee ballots have to be returned by 5 p.m. and ballots received through mail must be in the Auditor-Treasurer office by 8 p.m. on Election Day.
For those who are having someone else return a ballot on their behalf, Hotovec has this message: "A person can return up to three ballots on behalf of somebody else. They need to show ID and sign the agent delivery roster."
Voting hours are extended 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.
