From City of Winthrop
WINTHROP - The City of Winthrop is excited to announce that it has been selected to receive $240,000 in funding from Minnesota Housing through the 2026 Workforce Housing Development Program (WHDP). The funding will help support the development of eight new market-rate apartment units in Winthrop.
The Minnesota Housing Board of Directors approved the funding on September 24, 2026, as part of its efforts to expand workforce housing opportunities throughout Greater Minnesota.
The proposed Winthrop Apartments project has an estimated total development cost of $1.175 million. The $240,000 award will help close the funding gap and move the project closer to becoming a reality.
“This is exciting news for Winthrop,” said Winthrop Mayor Julie Trebelhorn. “Housing continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing rural communities. We have businesses that need employees and people who want to live here, but we need more housing options. This funding is another step toward making Winthrop a place where people can live, work, and raise their families.”
Winthrop’s application received 86 out of 90 possible points, demonstrating the project’s readiness, local support, and need for additional housing.
The Workforce Housing Development Program helps communities throughout Greater Minnesota develop rental housing that supports local employers, attracts new residents, and strengthens the workforce.
“This project isn’t just about building apartments. It’s about investing in Winthrop’s future,” added Trebelhorn. “When we create more housing opportunities, we help our local businesses, schools, and community continue to grow.”
The City will continue working with Minnesota Housing and project partners to complete the remaining funding requirements and move the development forward.
