Lederhosen Dash 5k was a breeze

By Dylan Jackson 2 min read

NEW ULM -- Forty-four Runners set off in breezy conditions Saturday morning for the second annual Lederhosen Dash 5k.

Starting at the fairgrounds, runners ran down State Street until reaching Center Street, where they turned. Once arriving at Garden Street, they continued to 14th North and looped back to the fairgrounds.

Money from the race went toward the Wellness Collective, which is located near the Backerei and houses fitness studios.

The Wellness Collective raises money to provide free classes which are offered every third Friday of the month.

"It could be a zumba class, a yoga class, kickboxing," Wellness Collective board member and 5k committee member Samantha Miller said.

Although there were no official times, Joseph Abrahamson took first place with his watch reading 21:40. Abrahamson said that prep work included "lots of running."

"I feel pretty good, it's my second race after starting running again," Abrahamson said.

Second place went to Chris Gordon, who ran the entire race in a lederhosen. He had run in a lederhosen previously and decided it was fitting for the name of the race.

"That last experience taught me that I won't have any ill physical effects from it so I think I'll be fine," Gordon said.

He tries to run five days a week and is ultimately trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon.

"I love running these local races and helping people be more aware of the benefits of running," Gordon said.

He said that the Lederhosen Dash 5k was a good place to start for new runners.

"Today's course is not that hilly so it gives newer runners a way to challenge themselves without being scared of the hills," Gordon said.

Miller said that the goal of the 5k was to create an opportunity for people to come together and move their bodies.

The event was just that for third place runner Brenden Landbehn.

He said the reason he attended was because he is new to town and figured it would be a good way to get involved. Having been seven years since his last 5k, Landbehn said third place felt pretty good.
