Tik Tok threats force soft lockdown of Sleepy Eye Schools

2 min read

SLEEPY EYE - Sleepy Eye Public Schools and Sleepy Eye St. Mary's Schools were in a soft lockdown Tuesday after a threat was distributed on TikTok against both schools.

Sleepy Eye Police Department (SEPD) were notified of a social media post that include photos of both schools along with threatening statements directed toward the Sleepy Eye schools.

SEPD worked with representatives from Sleepy Eye Public Schools and St. Mary's School to assess the situation. Out of caution, both schools remained in soft lockdown for the school day. This precaution secures the exterior perimeter of the schools and restricts access to outside visitors while allowing normal classroom activities to continue inside the buildings.

Shortly after 2 p.m., SEPD confirmed a suspect was in custody related to the incident.

SEPD had officers monitoring both schools throughout the day.

SEPD acknowledged that similar school-related social media threats have been circulating nationwide and there is currently no indication this was a credible threat to either Sleepy Eye school, but all threats are taken seriously and investigated accordingly.

Sleepy Eye Schools lifted the soft lockdown around 3 p.m.

The schools will return to normal operation Wednesday.

All classes, entry procedures, transportation, and extracurricular activities will run on their standard schedules tomorrow.

Starting at /week.
