NEW ULM -- Carsten Nienhaus said he feels good about Brown County Fair rabbit shows this year.
He should. He raised 27 rabbits that are involved in the Brown County Fair show that begins at 11 a.m. today.
Last year, one his of rabbits placed third in Minnesota State Fair market carcass pen competition.
A Sleepy Eye Public School sophomore this fall, he competes in 4-H and FFA livestock shows for the Sleepy Eye Wide Awakes with his chickens and ducks too. He really likes rabbits.
"They are fun to take care of. They aren't hard to clean. They clean themselves, but I like ducks more because lots of people like to watch them splash around," said Nienhaus, holding "Lucy," a New Zealand rabbit.
He said "Lucy" looks better that last year's rabbit that was third in the state.
"Lucy looks pretty good, a lot bigger than my best rabbit last year. I try not to get too attached to them because they are butchered after the shows,"said Nienhaus.
He talked about county fair shows.
"It's a busy week overall. A lot of details," said Nienhaus. "I think I have the most rabbits here at the fair. I raised at least 27 of them that are here. I loaned some of them out."
Thursday is Senior Citizen Day at the fair featuring the Outstanding Senior Citizen, Brown County Farm Family of the Year and Century Farm recipients at 10 a.m. on the Civic Center stage. Complimentary refreshments and entertainment by Ken & Ken follow the program.
Livestock events include a beef show in the cattle arena at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. rabbit show in the rabbit/poultry barn, 4 p.m. sheep show and 6 p.m. goat show in the Heartland Bus Barn.
Carnival rides open and the Shaun Jay presents the Magic of Music at 3 p.m. on the Civic Center stage. The new Ninja Experience live action show begins at 3:30 and 6 p.m. on the outdoor stage.
The demolition derby begins at 7 p.m.
Tanner Stark will perform 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. in the beer garden.
Friday is Kid's Day at the fair. A dairy show begins at 9 a.m. in the cattle arena. A hog show begins at 9:30 a.m.
The Shaun Jay Magic of the Farm show begins at 10 a.m.,. 1:30 and 4 p.m. on the Civic Center stage. Making Faces by Mankato Face Painting and Baloon Art is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Early Childhood Family Education and Park and Rec on the Go starts at 10 a.m.
