NEW ULM -- Despite rain showers that lasted much of the day, volleyball players and wrestlers got busy in tons of sand on Minnesota Street Friday night.
In early volleyball pool play, the Cathedral alumni Sandblasters topped Lola's 21-8, 21-11.
First-round wrestling included Shane Kramer of Hutchinson-Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Liam Horner of New Ulm. Kramer won, 10-0.
Earlier Friday, Ground Zero Services poured 1,200 tons of sand across two downtown blocks. Ground Zero owner Jason Kuester said the rain was not a problem.
"We've got a system on how to do it," he said.
New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce President Sarah Warmka said the volleyball tournament is a rain or shine event.
Warmer, sunnier weather is forecast for Saturday with a high temperature of 84 degrees. Volleyball play begins at 7 a.m. Saturday and should conclude by 10:30 p.m.
Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to watch volleyball and wrestling. Many downtown bars and restaurants have extended their liquor licenses to do business in the street Saturday. It means beverages may be taken outside of businesses, but must remain inside marked areas.
Spikin' in the Street is privately-funded by local businesses and organized by volunteers and the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce. Funds raised support the promotion of New Ulm and ongoing efforts of the New Ulm Business & Retail Association.About 100 wrestlers from New Ulm, Hutchinson-Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Wabasso, Windom, Rochester, Albert Lea, St. Paul Cretin-Durham Hall, Adrian, Lake Crystal, Redwood Valley, St. James, Apple Valley, Grove City, Sherburn and other towns tangled in the Downtown Throwdown Sand Takedown Tournament.
