Local girl scouts help plant trees in German Park

NEW ULM - The number of trees in German Park increased by seven Tuesday, thanks to members of the River Valley Girl Scout.
Brynn Lehman, Freya Wurtzberger, Abigail Achman and Isabelle Achman assisted Tony Guggisberg of River Creek Nursery in planting five new trees along the paver stone path in German Park and two evergreen trees near the Black Forest path in German Park.
New Ulm Park and Recreation Director Joey Schugel said these trees were serving as replacement for trees that were removed last fall and earlier this summer. The five trees near the paver stone path became infested with emerald-ash-borer and needed to be taken down.
Guggisberg to the girl scouts that the new trees they were planting were all different species and were chosen for their diversity.
"We want to diversify so no disease or insect takes them out," he said.
The new paver stone tree species include a Princeton elm, greenspire linden, tuliptree, honey locust and hackberry tree. Two balsam fir trees were added to Black Forest path.
Guggisberg said it was difficult day for planting trees as the ground was dry making it a real-workout for the girl scouts to dig the holes for the balsam trees, but by working together they were able to manage the task.
Once the trees were put in place, Guggisberg said the city would need to make sure they each received five gallons of water at least twice a week during the current heatwave.
