NEW ULM – A third candidate has filed for New Ulm School Board,

Tara Nilson officially filed her affidavit of candidacy for the District 88 School Board Thursday.

Nilson described herself as a stay at home mother of an 11 year-old and a 14-year-old, both of whom attend New Ulm Public School.

Nilson is originally from Minneapolis where she attended public school. She moved to New Ulm in 2010. Nilson said she wanted to run for school board to have a voice in the community.

Three school board seats are on the ballot during the general election on Nov. 3; the seats currently held by board chairman Steve Gag, Melissa Sunderman and Amanda Groebner.

Gag and Sunderman previously filed for re-election, but Groebner announced she would not being running for another term.

With Nilson joining the school board race, there will be at least three candidates on the ballot for the general election.

In the election, voters will be asked to select three candidates to fill the open seats for the next four years. The candidates receive the top three votes will be appointed to the school board.

If no other candidates file for New Ulm School Board between now and the July 28 filing deadline, the election will be uncontested.
