SLEEPY EYE – Students from the River Bend enjoyed a day on the water Monday during a fishing trip to Sleepy Eye Lake.
River Bend teacher Jennifer Isaac said each grade got a chance to try their hand at fishing during the day. This was the first time the school held a fishing field trip. The outing gave students the chance to learn new skills, spend time outdoors with friends and staff.
For several students, this was their very first fishing experience. One of the highlights came from Brenton Malcom who said, “I’m taking her home. She’s a keeper!” after reeling in some seaweed that quickly became one joke of the day.
Fishing came with its fair share of challenges as well.
Throughout the afternoon, Jon Virkus could be heard asking, “Why does my line keep jamming?”

Despite the setbacks, he stayed determined and upbeat. Reflecting on his performance, Virkus said “I went 4 for 16 today while fishing.”
Myia Stone summed up her fishing experience, saying “[I am] basically a pro fisher woman.”
The fishing trip was end of school year celebrations. River Bend’s last day of class is Thursday, June 4.
