Brown County Sheriff’s Office receives fraud call reports
NEW ULM — The Brown County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday it has received reports of callers impersonating sheriff’s office personnel.
Reports of the encounters are generic in nature, while some encounters are more detailed, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
In some reports, callers identify themselves as the Brown County Sheriff’s Office or Brown County Chief Deputy Jeremy Reed.
Callers tell individuals they have missed a court date and there is a warrant for their arrest. The caller also provides the real badge number, the real office desk phone number, and the main number to the Brown County dispatch center.
Callers will attempt to get personal identification information, Social Security numbers, banking information, or other forms of payment.
If anyone suspects that a telephone call from someone claiming to be a police office is fraud, immediately hang up and call local police directly using a verified number to verify the caller’s identity. Do not call back on the number that the scammer provides.
Law enforcement will not ask for personal identification information, Social Security numbers, banking information, or payments through PayPal, or gift cards.
