Candidate filing period closes Tuesday

BROWN COUNTY – Time is running out for candidates to enter local school board the municipal elections.

The deadline for candidate filings is 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 13. For New Ulm school board, only three incumbents have filed for re-election, and no newcomers have entered the race. This leaves a seat potentially up for grabs.

Soon after filing opened, Vice Chair Jonathan Schiro threw his hat in the ring for what would be his third term. He said he wants to continue working in the school district near and dear to his family.

“I have really enjoyed being on the school board and giving back,” Schiro said. “Both my kids and my wife have graduated from here. With everything in the CTE center and our new superintendent, I want to help move things forward.”

Matt Ringhofer is also looking to re-capture his place on the board. He said his work with fellow board members has put them in a great direction and has made him a happy camper.

“The school board has been a very rewarding opportunity,” Ringhofer said. “It has been great to be part of a system that has done great things for kids.”

Initially on the fence, Christie Dewanz decided Thursday to run for another term.

Denny Waloch is the only candidate who has not submitted a candidacy affidavit. He has said he is not sure if he wants to run again.

All forms, resources, and information necessary to file can be found online at https://newulm.k12.mn.us/school-board-election/. Prospective candidates can come to the district office anytime between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. from now until the deadline. Appointments can be made but are not necessary.

The candidate filing period for Sleepy Eye’s council and mayoral position is also set to close Tuesday, Aug. 13. Former Sleepy Eye City Councilor Joann M. Schmidt filed for Mayor on July 30. As of Thursday, nobody else has filed for Ward 1 and Ward 2 city council positions.

No candidates have filed for three open positions on the Sleepy Eye Public School Board.

In Lafayette, two council seats and the mayor’s office are up for election. Sandra Peterson has filed for mayor in Lafayette on Aug. 5. Scott Portner and Logan VanDeest both filed for Lafayette city council last week.

The Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop (GFW) school board election has seen a single candidate file. Mark Turtle of Gibbon filed for an open school board seat Aug. 1. No candidates have filed for open positions representing Fairfax or Winthrop.

Starting at $4.38/week.
