SE Council OKs ending community center leases

By Fritz Busch 1 min read

SLEEPY EYE -- Due to building damage caused by lessees, the Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved no longer offering leases at the Community Center main hall Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye City Manager Bob Elston said he recently noticed permanent Magic Marker marks on the new community center floor.

"We spent $15,000 on a new floor. It'll cost us several hundred dollars to clean it. It's aggravating. Do we want to continue fixing and re-fixing it?" Elston said.

"If we can't pay someone to babysit people using the Sleepy Eye Community Center, (115 2nd Ave. N.E.) I suggest we use it for our purpose -- elections," he added.

Elston said the Sleepy Eye Event Center, 110 12th Ave. N.E. is available for larger events or divided into meeting rooms. The 13,000 square foot facility can seat more than 500 for weddings, parties, celebrations and other events.

The city council agreed to honor community center leases the city has but will not be available for new leases.
