Promoting activity while reading, walking

NEW ULM -- Anyone looking for a fun story and a little exercise is encouraged to take a lap around St. Anthony's Elementary school this week.
Through Friday, Feb. 2 New Ulm Area Catholic School will be hosting the "Story Stroll."
The Heart of New Ulm's Safe Routes to School group has partnered with area schools to combine walking with story telling. The idea of a story stroll is to take the pages of children's book an display them along a walking route around an area school.
This year's story is "Old Rock (is not boring) by Deb Pilutti. The book tells the story of an old rock's journey through time. The pages from the book will be displayed at two school's this year. The story stroll will start at St. Anthony's and next week moved to Jefferson Elementary.
St. Anthony Principal Karen Schulte said her school received the book first because it is Catholic Schools Week, however she said anyone from the public can following the story stroll.
"The purpose of the story stroll is to promote activity," Schulte said.
On Monday, the book pages were displayed on traffic cones surrounding the school. Page one starts at the entrance of St. Anthony's.
Teachers were encouraged to take their students on a walk around the building and enjoy the story together.
St. Anthony's 2nd Grade class was one of the first to enjoy the story. Teacher Allison Hazuka led students on the story stroll Monday afternoon. The students were excited to have storytime outside. Other classes soon followed.
The story stroll porgram began as a Safe Routes to School initiative to promote walking, but it also celebrate"I Love to Read Month," which takes place in February.
The story stroll will move to the Jefferson/Middle School campus next week, starting Monday, Feb. 5.
