NEW ULM -- The feast day of St. Nicholas of Myra is celebrated every year on Dec. 5 or Dec. 6 in Germany and in the Netherlands. It is also observed at the New Ulm Public Library.
According to the tradition, the good children who leave their shoes outside their door on St. Nicholas Eve will find prizes and treats inside the next morning. Each year, the library hosts a celebration where local children can meet St. Nick and his companion Krampus.
Before St. Nick arrived this year, the children took part in a holiday themed story time. The kids listen to Youth Service Librarian Kathryn Tatnall read the book "Jingle Bells" by Maryann Kovalski. The kids were given sleigh bells to play along with the reading.
Tatnall also read "Story of Saint Nicholas" by Laura Wagner. The book told the story of Nicholas, the bishop of Turkey who was devoted to charitable works.
After storytime, St. Nicholas met with the children, giving the good children a holiday treat. Krampus stood by in case St. Nick needed a switch for a naughty kid, but said there was no need for it this year. He said both St. Nick and parents believed the children were well behaved this year.
