Final levy to be adopted Dec. 19
NEW ULM -- Brown County commissioners will consider a 7.5% 2024 proposed property tax levy hike for certification to the county auditor/treasurer Tuesday, Sept. 26.
The proposed levy increase is due to a $480,751 expenditure increase from 2023, primarily due to adding a new deputy sheriff, assessor technician, higher fuel, wages, benefits, property and liability costs, according to the board request.
Additional reserves or an increase in state or federal funding would be needed if commissioners set the proposed levy under the proposed 7.5% increase. The preliminary 2024 tax levy is $16,760.426. The draft 2024 count budget is $42,415,674.
The final budget and levy is suggested to be adopted by the county board on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The final property tax levy may be equal to or less than but not more than the 2024 proposed property tax levy.
Commissioners will also consider:
• A resolution to accept the Marktplatz Mall sale parcel. The center section of the mall was forfeited in June 2023 for a sale price of $35,913.97 plus applicable fees and any accrued interest, due to blighted property conditions. The sale price is based on back taxes due and payable 2023 taxes. Fees are $1,266.94 to be paid to the title company at least two days prior to closing.
• 2024 Medica health insurance plans and premium rates renewal reflecting a 5.8% combined increase over 2023 rates for four plans.
• Setting a cannabis ordinance public hearing for 9:05 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 17 in the courthouse commissioner's room.
• The Sept. 26 meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the courthouse commissioner's room.
