Demolition derby delights full-house crowd

NEW ULM — The Brown County Fair demolition derby grandstand crowd was so large Saturday, people were asked to squeeze together to make room for more spectators.

Like they did Thursday night, New Ulm brothers Michael and Anthony McDermott dominated their heats, finishing first and second in the Gut & Go Trucks class. Two days earlier, they finished first and second in the Mighty Mini Event.

On Saturday, Michael McDermott drove a 2002 Chevy Tahoe. Earlier this year, the McDermotts placed high at demolition derbies in Redwood Falls and Garden City.

“There’s no other (adrenaline) rush like it.” Michael McDermott said about competing in demolition derbies.

He said he plans on competing in the Saturday, Sept. 30 Pumpkin Smash Demolition Derby at the Brown County Fairgrounds.

Jake Johnson won the Compact heat followed by Max Stevenson and Robert Engelking.

Jason Wiese of Pipestone won a hard-fought 80s heat with lots of flying mud and smoke. James Link was second, Jason Dallenbach third and Alex Braun fourth.

Wiese came right back to win the 80 class, driving a 1987 Lincoln Continental with a Corvette LS 3 engine. Wiese admitted he has $10,000 invested in the engine alone.

Wiese drove a 1991 Ford Crown Victoria with a GM 350 engine to win the Old and New Limited Weld heat. Dustin Reinhart was second and Jason Rewitzer third.

“I haven’t driven in two consecutive heats in about 10 years, but I thought I might as well since I brought two cars here. There’s just no other rush like it,” said Wiese, drinking a bottle of ice water after the heats.

Wiese said his day jog is signal maintenance for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

Earlier this summer, he competed in the Border Wars Demo Derby at the Stanton County Ne. County Fair.

“It’s a blast,” Wiese said of the Nebraska demo derby featuring some of the best drivers from the Upper Midwest.

Chase Kerkhoff of Morgan won the truck division in a 2005 Ford F250 with a 383 Chevy motor. Kyle Christenson was second, Josh Luneberg third and Caleb Reding was fourth.

“Winning a demolition derby is a lot of fun. Nothing compares to it,” said Kerkhoff.
