NEW ULM -- German Park was packed full of neighbors Monday as part of the National Night Out celebration.
The annual celebration is a nationwide event designed to help communities fight back against crime by helping neighbors connect, watch out for each other and become more familiar with their police departments.
The event was sponsored by the New Ulm Police Department, New Ulm Fire Department, United Way, and the New Ulm Park and Rec. Several other organizations hosted booths or stations in the park to promote fun and community safety.
Park and Rec. brought several of its Park on the Go activities to the park, including multiple bounce houses and games.
On the community safety side, The New Ulm Fire Department had several fire vehicles in the parking lot below German Park. This included an antique vehicle; the 1870 pump wagon. The old pump wagon was connected to a pool. Visitors could try pumping water the old fashion way. Several young kids took turns working as an old fashion firefighter.
Later in the evening, the fire department held a safety demonstration on the dangers of grease fires. A simulated grease fire was created in a stage kitchen. First, the firefighters demonstrated how to properly extinguish a grease fire, by placing a pan over the fire to smother the open flame.
The second part of the demonstration showed what could go wrong if a person tried to extinguish the fire with water. To show the severity, a cup of water was thrown on the grease fire, which erupted into a massive fireball.
Schell's Hobo Band played the amphitheater during National Night Out. The band's performance was part of the weekly Music in the Park event, but the band played a longer set for National Night Out.
Police Chief David Borchert said this year's National Night Out was well attended. The neighborhood party saw guests coming in right from the start. Borchert credited the weather for the strong turnout. For late July, the temperature and humidity were low.
The 2023 National Night Out was special for another reason. This year, Borchert was able to give the "Good Neighbor Award."
The Good Neighbor Award is given to those who go above and beyond to assist their neighbors. The award is not given every year, but this year Chase Skogberg received the award for his heroic acts on Nov. 8, 2022.
In the early morning hours of Nov. 8, Skogberg risked his own life to enter the burning home of a neighbor that sustained an explosion. Skogberg was able to carry his neighbor from the fire, saving his life.
Skogberg received the Good Neighbor Award from Police Chief Borchert and Fire Chief Paul Macho and was given special recognition.
