NEW ULM--- Quilt enthusiasts gathered in New Ulm Saturday to view quilts throughout the city during the Quiltistry event.
While usually a biennial event, Quiltistry is returning after four years due to 2021 being cancelled over the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame displayed miniature quilts. Other quilts of various sizes and designs were displayed throughout the Hall of Fame.
The Wanda Gag House showed quilts from the ’30s and 40’s and quilts from their collection. The centerpiece was a large green quilt, donated by Patricia Keairnes in 1997. The quilt contains twelve squares, each of them has a design created by the Gag siblings. The squares were then commissioned to be turned into a quilt by Wanda Gag’s friend and collaborator Alma Scott.
The Junique House displayed work created by the Twister Sisters. The Twister Sisters create their unique “Twister” designs using a tool called a pinwheel square. The pinwheel square frames the fabric to be cut in squares with crooked splashes of color. The squares are then stitched back together. The crooked splashes come together to make the pinwheel shape.
Schell’s Brewery showcased a variety of quilts within their gift shop. In previous years quilts were displayed around the Brewery grounds. This year they were displayed inside due to inclement weather.
Grace Community Church displayed king and queen bed size quilts. Raffle tickets could be bought inside for the 2024 New Ulm Quilt Show. Winner of the raffle will receive a quilt named “Eldon”. The event will take place April 5 and 6, 2024.
The Brown County Museum brought quilts out from their collection to be exhibited. One of their quilts was made from scrap materials in 1910. It was stitched together using irregular sized pieces taken from leftover fabric or salvaged from old dresses. This quilted style is called a "crazy quilt."
Quilts did not appear at the Hermann Monument or the Glockenspiel and Schonlau Park due to inclement weather.
