Lafayette supper social to benefit Compton family

LAFAYETTE– While Brittany and Eli Compton were anticipating the birth of their second child last July, they learned that their unborn child would be born with several health issues. They learned that their unborn child had extra fluid on his brain. When little Levi was born July 20, 2022, doctors also discovered several other physical abnormalities--he was born with an extra thumb on each hand and the sutures in his skull had fused prematurely, while still in utero. Skull sutures must remain open for the first year or two of life so that a child's brain can grow and mature. If left untreated, blindness, severe mental disabilities and delays, seizures, and even death can occur.
Levi had surgery in February to re-open the fused skull sutures. A zig-zag incision was made from ear to ear, exposing his forehead to re-shape and reposition the front of his head.
"He came through the surgery very well and was only in the hospital for four days, not the week expected," Brittany said.
Surgery was also performed to remove the extra thumbs on Levi's hands.
Future MRIs will be needed to determine if a head shunt will be needed to drain the excess fluid on Levi's brain.
Levi is seeing a long list of medical specialists at Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul and Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis to get all his health issues addressed with required treatments and procedures for a better quality of life.
The June 23 benefit will include a supper and ice cream social, silent auction, and cash raffle, all at the Lafayette Community Center. Raffle tickets are now being sold by Lions members.
A free will offering will be accepted for the supper and pie social. The menu includes hot dogs, brats and kraut, pie, dessert, and ice cream.
The silent auction will be open from 5:00 to 7:45 p.m., with the raffle drawing at 8:00 pm. Donations for the silent auction may be dropped off at Citizens Bank Minnesota, the City Clerk's Office, Community Insurance, UFC, and Dave's Place, all in Lafayette.
Eli Compton grew up in Lafayette and worked for his dad, Al Fox, in the city maintenance department for a number of years. He's worked at 3M in New Ulm for the past 10 years; Brittany also works at 3M.
Eli is a member of the Lafayette ambulance squad so continues to serve the city.
Brittany and Eli have an older son, Jacoby, five years old.
