NEW ULM — Brown County commissioners unanimously approved a conditional use permit Tuesday to allow an annual special event campground to accommodate up to 55 campsites on property in Section 4, Mulligan Township.

Approval of the application filed by Alan M. Johnson came on a motion by Commissioner Dave Borchert, seconded by Scott Windschitl.

Johnson said a clean and sober bike rally will be held Thursday through Sunday, July 13-16 on property just west of CR 8, several miles south of Leavenworth.

Conditional use permit conditions include observing quiet hours from midnight to 8 a.m. for the event lasting up to four days.

“We transport motorcycles and go to a lot of rallies. We’re tired of going and watching everyone get drunk. We don’t drink. No alcohol will be allowed. If we smell alcohol on anyone, they will be turned around,” Johnson said. “There’s a lot of people in recovery that are coming. It’s a clean and sober bike rally. This will be a family event with (unarmed) security. We’ll have bands playing Friday and Saturday night.”

Nobody lives within a half mile of the event site. Two farmsites are within three-fourths of a mile, according to a concentric ring map. An event site map includes camper, tent and stage areas and two restroom facility (port-a-potty) sites.

Commissioners unanimously approved a conditional use permit application filed by Brian Aschenbrenner on property owned by Brian & Teresa Aschenbrenner, Section 32, Stark Township to allow up to 694 animal units (AU) in a beef cattle operation in the A-1 Agricultural Protection Zone.

Approval came on a motion by Brian Braun, seconded by Tony Berg. The current 250 AU operation will increase by 443 AU with construction of a 232′ x 50′ total confinement barn. An additional 11,250 square foot concrete lined solid manure storage area will be built.
