Local veterans hang Doughboy wreath

NEW ULM-- Local veterans held the annual laying of the wreath on Thursday. The laying of the wreath honors the "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statue at New Ulm Cemetery.
Jon Gohr, Roger Hoffmann, Tom Flatua, Denny Warta, John Ingebritson and Al Gag saluted the Doughboy statue while Gohr played "Taps" from his cell phone.
The wreath is created every year by local volunteers using real tree clippings and poppies. The clippings are stapled onto a large green circle. The red board in the middle reminds veterans why the wreath is displayed annually. 'Lest we forget'.
The New Ulm Memorial Day Observance begins at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 29. The parade will form at the City Cemetery and go down Cemetery Avenue.
Brigadier General and New Ulm Public School superintendent Jeff Bertrang will be speaking at the Observance at 10. Recent New Ulm High School graduates Mitchell Schotzko and Nathanial Janssen will give the Gettysburg Address and Memorial Address respectively.
