Brown Co. Board to hear business update
NUBRIC director Paul Wessel on agenda
NEW ULM — Brown County commissioners will receive a New Ulm Business Resource and Innovation Center (NUBRIC) update from director Paul Wessel Tuesday, April 18.
The county board meets at 9 a.m. in the courthouse commissioner’s room.
Formerly known as the New Ulm Economic Development Corporation, NUBRIC is a private, non-profit organization that promotes New Ulm and facilitates economic growth by providing resources to attract and stimulate business expansion.
Wessel developed a board of industry leaders from New Ulm to advise on community growth. Plans include programs to help entrepreneurs (a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risks to do so, combining capital, land and labor to manufacture goods and provide services.
An inventor and entrepreneur, Wessel has built and sold several medical device companies. He has received many awards including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Concordia University.
Commissioners will also consider:
• A first quarter summary report for Sentence to Service and Community Work Crews projects and justice-involved individuals’ hours completed from Brown County Probation Director Evonn Westcott and STS Crew Leader Eric Bruns.
• Authorizing Westcott to sign a $125,500 Minnesota Dept. of Corrections Caseload/Workload Reduction Grant for fiscal year 2024-25. The Dept. of Corrections has provided the fund since 1999 as a response to lack of 50% county salary reimbursement. Brown County uses the funds to supplant one agent’s salary.
• Approving the purchase of two portable radar speed sign trailers. The Brown County Sheriff’s Department purchased two radar speed signs last fall to be deployed at various county locations. Three trailer options will be considered.
• Authorizing the county highway department to buy a power broom, an essential piece for highway seal coating. The highway department got just one state bid price for the power broom, $83,923 from RDO, minus a $13,500 trade-in allowance for a price of $70,423.
