GAYLORD -- The Sleepy Eye bar owner wanted in Brown County for allegedly stealing charitable gambling proceeds from the Sleepy Eye Area association is in custody in the Sibley County Jail and faces more charges there.
Charges were recently filed in Sibley County against 26-year-old Dane A. Burton, the owner of Poppy's Bar & Play in Sleepy Eye. Burton faces felony charges of obstructing the legal process and misdemeanor violation an order for protection.
An omnibus hearing for Burton is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13. He remains in Sibley County Jail custody. Cash bail was set at $10,000 with conditions, $100,000 without conditions.
Burton faces felony theft and unauthorized sale/possession of gambling equipment in Brown County.
According to court documents, the Sibley County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 hangup call from a Winthrop residence at 4:43 p.m. March 26. Sibley County Dispatch advised that the residence owner, Natalie Burton, had an active Order For Protection in place against her son, Dane A. Burton, since Feb. 15, 2023.
Gaylord Police Officer Alex Schmidt and Sibley County Deputy Jonathon Lichty found Burton in the residence. He was uncooperative and argumentative. Burton tried to flee the residence. As Schmidt blocked him from leaving a bedroom, Burton grabbed the handle of Schmidt's firearm that was holstered on his belt.
Schmidt secured the gun with his right hand before Burton was taken to the ground. Burton resisted arrest and later denied trying to grab Schmidt's firearm. Natalie Burton said she saw Dane Burton grab Schmidt's gun.
Burton later apologized to Schmidt for grabbing the gun before he was transported to the Sibley County Jail.
