Commmissioners ok demolition landfill, gravel mining permits

For Mathiowetz Construction in Leavenworth Township

NEW ULM -- Brown County commissioners unanimously approved renewing two conditional use permits (CUPs) for Mathiowetz Construction in Leavenworth Township during their Tuesday, March 21 meeting.

Action on a CUP application moved by Commissioner Brian Braun and second by Tony Berg. The request, filed by Keith Olson of Mathiowetz Construction, is for property owned by Ladd Demolition & Aggregates to continue use of property as demolition landfill compliant with MPCA rules for disposal of demolition and earthen material.

Action on the second CUP application, filed by Olson on property owned by Ladd Demolition & Aggregates, would allow continued gravel mining to include gravel mining and extraction, crushing and hot-mix plant. Approval was moved by Berg, seconded by Braun.

Owner operators must provide dust control on township roads when hauling takes place in the demolition area, according to the permits, effective for three years from date of issue.

Commissioner Berg said township roads were built long ago.

"Township roads are five-ton roads but heavier equipment are being used on them now," said Berg. "In my mind, we have a system of roads that is basically outdated. I don't know of any way around it. They (Mathiowetz Construction) use water because they have a water truck and use it."

Commissioner Braun said felt gravel mining was a necessary need for the county and knowing there may be opportunities down the road to help townships, he made a motion to approve the first permit.

Commissioner Berg said the second permit was for the same site with the same issues before he made a motion to approve it.
